No app to choose, no menu to learn, no screen to check. Technology that keeps pace with your mind, then steps aside.
A lineage, six principles, a method and what comes next.
An old idea, finally buildable.
Martin Heidegger
01 / 10A hammer disappears into the hammering. A tool works best when it withdraws from attention.
NowGood technology is looked through, not at.
A blind man's cane stops being an object and becomes part of how he perceives the world.
NowThe goal is incorporation, not attention.
People and computers thinking together, in symbiosis, each doing what it does best.
NowAI should complete a thought, not demand a new one.
Every medium is an extension of a human sense or faculty, and it reshapes the person who uses it.
NowDesign the extension and you shape the person.
The most profound technologies disappear, woven into everyday life until they cannot be told apart from it.
NowCalm is a feature.
The extended mind: a notebook can be part of how a person thinks, not just a place to store thoughts.
NowA system that remembers for you is part of your mind. Design it with that respect.
- The idea, built
The screen is no longer drawn in advance. It is assembled for the moment, from what a person means.
NowThe interface becomes a result, not a place.
You say what you want, and the interface is generated from your intent.
NowAsk for the outcome, not the app.
A phone without a grid of apps is shown in public: one intent, one generated interface.
NowThe grid of apps becomes optional.
An operating system that understands intent reaches people's hands. The extension of the mind becomes a product.
NowA century-old idea, finally buildable.
Six principles. One test: does it keep pace with your mind?
Thought is the interface
A tool should disappear into the intention behind it.
Nobody should have to translate a thought into a menu.
The most advanced technology is the one you stop noticing, because it keeps pace with your mind. It understands what you mean, prepares what comes next and steps aside. The same standard holds for a phone, a car and a pair of glasses.
You will stop choosing software
You say what you want. The interface is generated for that one moment.
Agents find the service and do the work.
When intent can be expressed directly, the app becomes a middleman. The interface is generated for the moment and dissolves after it. Software turns into a service you never have to choose, find or learn.
The best interface withdraws
Good technology is looked through, not at.
Calm is a feature.
Every badge, alert and confirmation is a small tax on attention. The work is deciding what deserves to surface, and letting everything else happen quietly and correctly.
Trust is designed
The screen is a receipt. When you trust, you do not ask for the receipt.
The screen fades when people stop needing to check, not when AI gets smarter.
When intelligence acts on your behalf, the question moves from how it looks to what it owes you.
The autonomy contract
It may prepare, remember and recommend.
It must show what it knows, what left the device and what changed.
It must ask before anything irreversible, sensitive or affecting another person.
It must repair its mistakes, visibly.
Autonomy without terms is not convenience. It is exposure. Capability is engineering. Consent is design.
Every device has two users
The one who bought it, and the one who did not.
The person across the table agreed to nothing.
Glasses, cameras and assistants extend one person's senses into another person's life. Consent at the speed of a glance is the next discipline.
With generative tools, the craft is refusal.
200/200
Two hundred options.
One kept.
When generation costs nothing, a thousand plausible answers arrive at once. The one that is right still costs judgment. With generative tools, design is what remains after refusal.
What remains is the design.Intent first
Begin with what a person means, never with a screen. An interface is an answer; intent is the question. When the question is clear, the answer can take any form, or none.
Make it run
An idea about intelligence that has never run is only a hypothesis. A working system is an argument. Understanding comes from making, so the thinking has to be built, tested and lived with.
Three lives of the screen.
- 01Window
- 02Generator
- 03Receipt
Software lived behind glass. You opened it, learned it and checked on it. Design meant making the window clearer.
Interfaces began to assemble themselves from what a person asked for, and the grid of apps started to dissolve.
Agents act. The screen shows what they did, what they know and what they need from you.
Window
2000 to 2015Software lived behind glass. You opened it, learned it and checked on it. Design meant making the window clearer.
Generator
2016 to 2025Interfaces began to assemble themselves from what a person asked for, and the grid of apps started to dissolve.
Receipt
2026 onwardAgents act. The screen shows what they did, what they know and what they need from you.
When software designs itself, these become the work.
- 01Consent designerDesigns permission at the speed of a glance.
- 02Silence designerDecides what never needs to reach you.
- 03Latency designerShapes the seconds between intent and result.
- 04Return designerDesigns the moment you come back to what was done while you were away.
- 05Purpose designerWrites what an agent is for, and what it must refuse.
- 06Taste directorKeeps one of two hundred, and knows why.
The interface disappears.
